And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie –
Chapter-wise Summary
Chapter 1
Eight strangers travel to Soldier Island (later called
Indian Island), each invited for different reasons. None of them actually know
the host.
Chapter 2
The guests arrive and meet two servants, Mr. and Mrs.
Rogers. The mysterious hosts, Mr. and Mrs. U.N. Owen, are absent.
Chapter 3
At dinner, a gramophone record suddenly plays, accusing each
person of having committed murder in the past. Everyone is shaken and
defensive.
Chapter 4
They realize the accusations are true in some form. Anthony
Marston, one of the guests, suddenly dies after drinking poisoned whisky.
Chapter 5
Panic spreads. The guests notice a nursery rhyme about ten
little soldiers displayed in the house. One figurine disappears, matching
Marston’s death.
Chapter 6
The group tries to make sense of the situation. Mrs. Rogers
dies in her sleep, apparently from a drug overdose.
Chapter 7
Fear intensifies. General Macarthur becomes withdrawn and
accepts his fate. Later, he is found dead, struck on the head.
Chapter 8
The remaining guests realize the murders follow the rhyme
exactly. They suspect one among them is the killer.
Chapter 9
Mr. Rogers is killed while chopping wood, matching another
line of the rhyme. Suspicion and paranoia grow stronger.
Chapter 10
Emily Brent is found dead after a bee sting. The group
becomes increasingly distrustful and terrified.
Chapter 11
Wargrave (the judge) suggests they organize and protect
themselves. Soon after, he is found “dead,” apparently shot.
Chapter 12
With Wargrave believed dead, chaos increases. Dr. Armstrong
disappears, and suspicion falls on Vera Claythorne and Philip Lombard.
Chapter 13
Lombard and Vera discover Armstrong’s body washed ashore.
Now only three remain: Vera, Lombard, and Blore.
Chapter 14
Blore is killed by a falling marble clock. Only Vera and
Lombard are left, each suspecting the other.
Chapter 15
Vera shoots Lombard in self-defense. She believes she is the
last survivor.
Chapter 16
Vera, psychologically broken, follows the final line of the
rhyme and hangs herself.
Epilogue
The police investigate but cannot solve the mystery.
Final Twist (Confession)
A letter reveals the truth:
Judge Wargrave faked his death and orchestrated everything. He killed all the
guests, believing they deserved punishment for crimes the law couldn’t touch.
After completing his plan, he killed himself.
Simple Understanding:
- Everyone
is guilty of a past crime.
- A
judge decides to play moral executioner.
- The
nursery rhyme is basically a murder checklist.
- Nobody
escapes. Not even the killer.
